How To Prevent Excessive Teeth Grinding?

I m a chronic teeth grinder. I m getting a mouth gaurd for at night, but it doesn t stop me from grinding during the day. My jaw is so tired and uncomfortable, but it feels so good to grind. I m a hair dresser and work in retail, so I m constantly under stress and talk to people on a regular. So I can t very well have a mouth gaurd in. Could I use denture stuff and adhere part of a gaurd on half my mouth? Haha

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain teeth grinding habit or Bruxism leads to continuous movement of the jaw and it causes jaw fatigue as well as jaw joint problems and also causes wearing away of teeth causing teeth sensitivity and pain..

Mouth guards can however reduce muscle fatigue and reduce the jaw fatigue but it does not cure Bruxism..
Burxism can therefore be treated by ruling out the underlying cause for it and the most common cause for it is stress and anxiety and in your case also it seems to be the most probable cause for the grinding habit..
Other causes that you can co-relate with your condition can be sleep apnea, excess use of alcohol, recreational drugs, side effects of medications like anti anxiety and depression controlling medications etc..
I would suggest you to as of now continue using mouthguards..
Consult a Psychologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and he can advise you to do certain remedies that can reduce stress and can help in relieving the symptoms like:
-Deep Breathing exercises.
-Yoga.
-Engaging in leisures and activities of your choice..
-Music therapy or listening to music.
-At times anti-anxiety medications can also be given..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
