How To Proceed With This Blood Test Result?

My husband recently had a PSA test with a result of 45.6. The test was repeated one week later with the same result. The first blood work also indicated an elevated white count and sed rate. After 7 days on Levofloxacin those rates were reduced. He has been referred to a local Urologist with a 3 week wait for an appointment. Should we be concerned about delaying?

Hi,

A PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood, and high levels of PSA can indicate prostate cancer or other prostate problems. In combination with an elevated white count and sed rate, which can indicate inflammation or infection in the body, it is important to follow up with a urologist as soon as possible to further investigate the cause of these abnormalities.

While a 3 week's wait for an appointment may seem concerning, it is important to remember that many urologists have busy schedules and may have a waitlist for appointments. However, if your husband experiences any significant changes in symptoms or new symptoms such as difficulty urinating, blood in urine, or severe pain, it may be necessary to contact the urologist's office and ask for an earlier appointment or seek medical attention in an emergency department.

In the meantime, your husband should continue to take any prescribed medications as directed and follow any recommendations from his primary care physician. It may also be helpful for him to make lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

A PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood, which is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels may indicate the presence of prostate cancer, but can also be caused by other factors such as infection, inflammation, or enlargement of the prostate.

The elevated white count and sed rate in the initial blood work suggest that there may have been an underlying infection or inflammation that was treated with Levofloxacin. It is good to see that the rates were reduced after treatment.

While waiting for the urologist appointment, it is important to continue monitoring any symptoms and to follow any recommended dietary or lifestyle changes. Don't worry about the delay of a few weeks, that is not likely to significantly affect your husband's prognosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
