Hello,
Thanks for the concern. According to history there is pain in the knee joint while getting upstairs and you are taking painkillers for them and history of kneecap broken15 yrs ago. there are many resons of pain in knee at this age in female but most probably may be osteoarthritis of knee joint with calcium deficiency. This can be diagnosed by xray knee joint in AP view and Lateral view.
You can take pain killers with serritopeptidase as when required, also calcium tablet for long time. Also for steroid injection can be given in knee joint but it give relief for months only than again pain will start. You can also take hyaluronic injection which will help in lubricating the knee joint.
You can also apply locally analgesic cream, capsaicin cream and also hot and cold spongying. You can also wear knee braces for pain relief. You should avoid long time squatting position.
If still not relieved than you should go for knee surgery (Total knee replacement ) Above all these you should also learn knee exercise.
So consult your treating Orthopaedic surgeon and start the treatment accordingly. Hope this might help you.
Take care.
