Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Reduce Swelling In The Legs And Ankles Due To Liver Cirrhosis?
Due to cirrhosis of the liver I have swollen legs/ankles. I don t use salt at all. What can I do to reduce swelling other than keeping my legs elevated. Is there any food I should eat more of or should I drink more water. We are always told to drink at least 2 litres a day but would this be wrong for me? Thanks Lorraine
Cirrhosis slows the normal flow of blood through the liver, thus increasing pressure in the vein that brings blood to the liver from the intestines and spleen. Swelling in the legs and abdomen.
The increased pressure in the portal vein can cause fluid to accumulate in the legs (edema) and in the abdomen (ascites). You should reduce salt intake, and use diuretics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Blerina Pasho, General & Family Physician
