I was detected with Thyroid six weeks back and doctor had prescribed 25mg Thyronorm. The recent test showed that it has come down to 3.28 from 6.13. The doctor has incresed the dosage to 50mg with the intention that the desired level should be below 2.5 I need to confirm the same and also request you to let me know as to how long it will take for my weight to come down which had increased due to this complaint Nirmala Rao
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The answers are:
1. TSH target:
The target TSH depends on several factors like age, cholesterol levels, symptoms, weight, other co-morbidities etc.
In my practice in young individuals, children, women desiring pregnancy and those with high cholesterol I will keep the TSH below 2.5miu/ml or as low in normal range possible without over dose symptoms.
In older people and those with cardiac disease I keep the TSH little bit relaxed at less than 5 miu/ml.
2. Weight loss:
The weight gain in hypothyroidism may or may not be related to thyroid problem. In you the hypothyroidism is only mild, so weight gain may not be related to that. The weight gained due to hypothyroidism will come to normal in 2-3 months of treatment with thyroxine.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
