Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

A swelling that is tender, warm and has appeared suddenly is likely to be an infection. However, there are other possibilities too and it is very difficult to come to a conclusion without examining the swelling.

Since the swelling is fairly large (you have mentioned it to be the size of a golf ball) and is painful, I would recommend that you visit your local doctor as early as possible to get it examined. Further treatment will depend on the type and cause of the swelling. Till you see your doctor, you can take a mild anti-inflammatory / pain-killer tablet for symptomatic relief.

Wish you all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar
