Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 89 year old dad has arrythemia and they are planning to put a pace maker in on Monday. He thinks he is going home the same day, what should we expect in terms of recovery and what will be needed to take care of him. He is the primary caretaker for our mom who has severe dementia.
After a pacemaker has been done patient usually needs to stay in the hospital for observation for a minimum period of 24 to 48 hrs, he cant go home the same day.
Things that needs to be taken care after a pacemaker are , For the first month he need to restrict the shoulder movement to below head level so as to allow the incision wound to heal properly and timely dressing of the wound till suture removal, next he should avoid lifting heavy weights on the side of the pacemaker for minimum 3 months after that not more than 5 kg, next he should avoid keeping cellphone in the shirt pocket and avoid being around the strong magnetic field (for eg welding works).
And lastly he should be in regular follow up with his cardiologist and take regular meds as advised.
Good Luck
