my son is 17 years old, two weeks ago he injured the front of his head, resulting in a large lump. He is usually fir and well. Today, this lump is noticeably more prominent. He has not suffered any sickness, but does have a headache. He did not have a scan after the injury.
I can understand your concern. The head injury does not always need CT scan. Only dangerous head injury needs CT scan. You can rule out it by observing him for few signs
: vomiting : bleed through nose/ear/throat : fits : loss of consciousness or decreasing consciousness : onset of new focal deficit : persistent headache not responding to painkillers.
If any of above signs, consult ER as soon as possible. CT head will be done to rule out fracture or brain bleed. Fracture is usually managed conservatively while bleed may require surgery.
If no above signs, do not worry. For pain and swelling, you can follow few tips
: Apply icepacks at injury site : You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after prescription : Avoid pressure at injury site : Keep head at higher level than chest : Still no relief, you can consult doctor.
Hope it will help you. Take care.
Thanks. Dr Ishu Bishnoi
