How To Treat And Heal A Bitten Tongue?

Hello doctor, I bit my tongue one year back but it has caused a swelling on the left bottom and on the top of the tongue due to over biting it whenever I eat, I visited a oral surgeon and advised me to chew food from the right side. But no change yet. Should I go for an operation?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain if you bite your tongue continuously then due to persistent injury there will be inflammation and swelling over the tongue. Chewing from the other side will not simply solve the problem and for getting it resolved you will have to be on a soft diet and more of fluids along with medications like ant inflammatory painkillers and a steroid shot for reducing inflammation and swelling.

In case if you have a tongue biting habit then you need to get mouth guards fabricated and placed to protect from tongue biting. Along with it, stress reduction is also needed as it is a common cause for such symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
