How To Treat Bruise And Lump Above Knee Caused After Injury?

I tipped over on a bicycle last Saturday, I have a bad bruise and a lump where the handle bar hit my inner leg just above the knee. The bruising is going away slowly but the lump is still sore and hard, will the lump eventually go a away? I was putting ice on it, is this OK or should I use heat?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Lump above the knee after injury due to tipping over on a bicycle may be indicative of hematoma (collection of blood in body tissue), bursitis, retained foreign body, developing cyst, abscess, fragments of cartilage or bone, fractured bone, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedics, or in the ER. Get X-ray, CT , MRI done.

For pain you can take NSAIDS, Combiflam, one SOS when required. If it is haematoma, you apply ointment Thrombophob, it will help reduce the lump. If it is abscess, bursitis or cysts, it may require minor surgery. Get treated at the earliest to avoid worsening of the symptoms that may limit your mobility. Do not strain unnecessarily.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
