How To Treat Canker Sores On Throat Despite Having Graves Disease?
I was diagnosed with graves disease on Jan 5th of this year. I am on 20mg of methimazole. The inside of my mouth is breaking out in canker sores. They re on the roof of my mouth, my tongue, gums, and I think I have one on my throat because it feels like I have a severe sore throat. Does this come along with graves symptoms?
Canker sores on your mouth, tongue, gums and on throat as per your query could be because of graves disease. As graves disease cause hormones out of adjustment specially female hormones due to which body becomes susceptible to yeast infections and these infections can cause thrush/ ulcers in mouth.
One of major contributing reason to your condition is Methimazole as increase frequency and dosage of it can cause ulcers, sores in mouth and cause dry mouth.
You should visit your endocrinologist if your symptoms are persisting. Your physician will either switch you to PTU instead of Methimazole. For Ulcers in mouth you should avoid spicy/hot food. Do betadine gargles at least 3 times a day.Maintain proper oral hygiene with supersoft tooth brush as brushing with hard bristles will create ulcers. Use antiinflammatory patches in mouth for faster healing.
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get Well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
