How To Treat Chronic Constipation?

I was constipated on September 17 and I stop taken my prescripton cause I did not know if that was causing me to be constipated and I know that I was going into the office the next week - when I came into the office to get my prescription refilled I told the assistant about my constipation and she told that I had to talk to the Doctor – I do not want to get addicted to this prescription so I am trying to live with the pain – sometimes I can go for about 4 days without taken anything and we I have to take the pills I take two a day – plus I have been using the hot tub – also I thought that each month with I get the refill that I was to refill them and lately I have had some pills left over – Dr. Baird can taken my urine again if she wants to – but like I have told her I DO NOTWANT TO GET ADICTED to these pills – and I was going to talk to Dr. Baird to see if she can reduce me down since I do not need that much – Plus on my prescription is says to take every 6 hours for pain and sometimes I do not have pain so I do not take them - I went to see my doctor last week and they take a urine test and now got a call today - test came back neg - so she is dropping me - but on the pills it say take as needed for pain - so I did not take them for 4 days - can she still drop me

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It could be chronic Constipation or Faecal Impaction. I advise you to follow:
1. High dietary fibre intake: Oatmeal porridge, Chapatis, brown bread with butter, honey or fruits such as prunes, dates, figs, mangoes, apricots, green vegetables
2. Drink 10 glasses of water in a day
3. Exercise
4. Develop regular bowel habit
5. Tab. Dulcolax or Tab. Cremalax - 1 at bed time
If not responding, rectal enema can be tried
6. Rule out disorders like hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome etc.
7. Also laxopeg sachet can be taken

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
