General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Black stools can indicate esophageal or gastric bleeding. Blood from upper gastro-intestinal tract on reaching rectum will turn dark and appear as dark stools. Bleeding can occur as a complication of ulcers. I would suggest you to take a gastric endoscopy for further management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
