How To Treat Damaged Phrenic Nerve Leading To Breathlessness Post Catheter Ablation?

Hello Doctor, In February of this year I had a catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. As a result, I had damage to my phrenic nerve and had breathing difficulties, mostly at night. The doctor assured me that it would get better over time. I thought it was better, but lately I seem to have slipped back and continue with the sleep problems. I get short of breath when walking too much and at night when I try to sleep. I have an appointment with a pulmonologist in November, but in the meantime, I have no energy and feel terrible a good part of the time. I m not sure where to go from here and the electro-physiologist has not been helpful in getting me to after care for this problem. I m at a loss. Hope you can help me.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, many of the cases of Phrenic nerve injury do remain symptomatic despite best of the therapeutic management. In selected cases after MRI and nerve conduction study evaluation:
@ Surgical reconstruction (very tricky and critical),
# Neurolysis
# Interposition grafting
# Neurotization

are done in top level institutes by experts with varying degree of success.

@ Diaphragmatic plication

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
