How To Treat Degenerative Cartilage Along With Torn Meniscus Behind The The Knee?

My MRI indicated a torn meniscus, degenerative cartilage and a cyst on the back of my knee. Of these my Dr sd my degen.cartilage was causing my pain/discomfort. He wants to do 5 injections of an oil into the knee. I had a fall and my body weight all went to the support of my foot/leg. I was told ligaments up and down my leg would be sore but would heal. Back to the oil injections. He said my torn meniscus was an old injury. Shouldn t this be considered first for treatment?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The meniscus injury management depends upon various clinical parameters such as:
- Amount of pain with intensity
- Restriction of routine activities
- Type of daily work as very active, sedentary life style or else
- Involvement of sports activities
- Age and associated co morbid conditions
- Level of degenerative changes of the knee joint
- Patient concerns for the issue
- Extent of damage as evidenced by MRI or X-ray as supportive document

The primary care consists of
- Assisted physiotherapy
- Postural adaptations
- NSAID
- Weight control
- Supportive braces
- Knee cap
- Plaster cast in some cases
- Surgery as last resort (arthroscopic approach preferred)

If you can share further needed details, we can discuss the issue far better
in sound clinical way.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
