Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My younger friend, who is 12, has epilepsy and has had severe seizures in the past. I don't know much about epilepsy but I am concerned because I am taking her to a big concert this summer. I looked up some videos of past concerts and saw that there are lots of strobe lights and bright flashing lights. She says she will be fine, but in case anything does happen, what do I do to keep her safe? It's going to be very crowded and I'm worried for her safety.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Epilepsy or seizure disorder occurs when brains electrical activity reaches a threshold and synchronous electrical discharge occurs. So the things that lower that threshold should be avoided in a patient of epilepsy. This is the reason patients of epilepsy are advised to take strong precautions for any triggers of seizures-
- The medicines should be taken regularly without forgetting even a single dose.
- Patient should have meals on time.
- Early to sleep and early to rise with at least 7-8 hours of sound sleep keeps the mind relaxed.
- Any loud sounds like in DJs or flashing lights like in concerts should be avoided completely. Patients are advised to avoid looking into flashing lights.
So as the concert will expose her to flashing lights there is risk of precipitation of seizures. Still if this cant be avoided she should take the medicines before that concert and should be watched closely. If seizures occur then consult a doctor immediately.
Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care.
Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi.
