Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Treat Foot Drop Caused Due To Nerve Damage After Having Back Surgery?
I had back surgery on two collapsed discs leaving me with a dropped foot will the nerve heal my op has been three years now I still have floppy toes but can move my toes .At my ankle joint I have no control will I be like this for the rest of my life ,will I ever be able to walk properly again that is without a stick
Since it's already 3 years, there is no chance of spontaneous recovery. Unlike other tissues in our body, nerves regenerates little, and improvement if any, should occur within 6 months.
But no need to loose hope. Some symptomatic improvement can be expected with physiotherapy and ankle-foot orthosis, provided irreversible contracture of Achilles tendon has not occurred. Also there is a tendon transfer procedure that can help some patients. Kindly see an orthopedist for discussing the same.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
