Someone I know is in prison and has just been diagnosed with stage 3 liver failure. The man does not drink nor does he take meds. I don t believe he has Hepatitis. He was recently diagnosed with diabetes and has lost about 40lbs (he is overweight) since entering the prison system 8 months ago. I was wondering what his life expectancy might be and what - if any- treatment he might receive while incarcerated?
Hi, It would be impossible and unwise to estimate his life-expectancy as it is related to many factors in addition to the details you mentioned. His diabetes should be treated the same whether he is in prison or not. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB. FRCA
