Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband gets excruciating leg cramps (charley horses) both at night and during the day. he is diabetic and has had an aortic valve replacement and takes multiple medications. he drinks plenty of water, eats bananas and takes a magnesium supplement twice a day. nothing seems to help. what more can he do to alleviate the pain?
Some remedies for leg cramps or pain in a diabetic patient may help to subside, such as tight controlling of blood sugar, cycling for improvement of blood flow, regular walking, soaking legs in warm water, message with mustard oil, using bed cradle, stretching exercises before sleep, wearing supportive footwear, physiotherapy for legs etc. Some medications such as Naproxen, pregabalin, Duloxetine or Amitriptyline, Calcium and vitamin D, vitamin B 12, antioxidants etc may help to reduce leg cramps. If your husband's leg cramps persist for long or bother you then you should consult your doctor first for medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician,
