How To Treat Lower Back Pain?

my wife has had a consistent pain in her lower back for almost 3 weeks. tonight the pain has increased to include her side. the pain has been debilating tonight where as pain medication has no effect. should I take her to an emergency clinic tonight or wait till morning if things settle down. any advice is appreciated
