Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 82yr old husband has several lumps in his armpit. He is being treat with antibiotics, pain meds and an attitude of wait and watch to see if the abscess quits draining. His Dr. has suggested he may need surgery to remove all the lymph glands in his armpit. Does this seem like a logical path of resolution?
Good day. Thanks for writing to HCM. If he is not responding to the conservative management with antibiotics and antiinflamatory medications within 48-72 hours he needs incision and drainage of the abscess. Secondly, if this is something that is troubling him recurrently its better to do a surgery straight away. In most cases, when there are multiple lumps that are infected it could be a condition called hydradenitis which will need surgery and prolonged antibiotics based on culture results. Hope this helps. I would appreciate if you give me a feedback for my answer. Wishing him good health. Regards.
