How To Treat Numbness And Curling Of Toe And Foot Caused Due To Sciatic Nerve Damage?
My son has leg atrophy above his knee and down to his foot. They conducted several tests and ruled any disease or tumor out. He has had numerous emg s and they concluded that he has sciatic nerve damage. The sciatic are is above his knee back side of his thigh mid point. He had a biopsy which concluded that the nerve was damaged possibly due to a hockey puck. They said the nerve was discolored and the consistency was abnormal. We have reached out to John Hopkins in Maryland for a second opinion. All the tests and results were sent down to them. They said there was nothing they could do. My son is now experiencing numbness in his toes and his foot is curling. He is loosing more muscle and his leg is getting smaller. Is there anywhere we can take him who specializes in something of this nature. Upset and so concerned....Melissa.
Melissa, sorry to hear. Traumatic nerve injury is probably causing this. Nerves lack the ability to regenerate hence the paucity of treatment options in neurological disorders. Regular physiotherapy is of prime importance now. Regarding the curative options one can look for regenerative medicine. Caution is advised as it may or may not benefit and better to enroll in some research trial where it'll be done for free instead of turning to medical tourism. Still research is ongoing in this field it'll be suitable if you discuss regarding this with the consulting neurologist. Also there's compatibility of stem cells, has anyone got stem cell banking done in your family either that or autologous bone marrow harvested stem cells from your son will do but this doesn't mean it'll cure the illness. It's just an option you can consider. Wishing your son will find a recovery path.
