How To Treat Numbness In Foot And Swelling In Hands Due To Nerve Damage Post Surgery?
Hi, My name is Doug, I am 52 years old. I ve had many surgeries. A severe motorcycle accident with spiral femur break that landed me in hospital for 8 months in 1979. Several other surgeries over the years. My latest was to remove 5 tumors from the bottom of my left foot back in August 2014. My foot is still numb from nerve damage. I ve been experiencing extreme fatigue after physical activity such as neuro muscular pain which can confine me indoors or in bed for a day or two. Swelling in hands and feet as well. Prior to the foot surgery I ve been very active in Martial Arts, maintaining a small farm and other things. Now I m unable to do the things I need to do. I was told the tumors were benine.
I suspect the nerve damage has involved the nerve supply to the arteries and capillaries in the foot and that is permitting the swelling to be more intense. This is seen too often I am sorry to say. Now there are some options here that might help, certainly medications like GABAPENTIN, PREGABALIN, and CYMBALTA can be used to help increase the nerve conduction from the feet and over time help to reduce the numbness.
Another option to be more precise is to have an EMG with nerve conduction studies performed, this might allow them to isolate the degree of nerve damage to see if this is something that might be able to be repaired surgically. If there is scar tissue that can isolated that is causing the nerve impingement that can be addressed surgically to relieve the numbness.
If there is swelling another option might be to use a short course of PREDNISONE to see if there is localized swelling around the nerve itself that might be reduced to restore nerve sensation, it would at least give us a clue as to the whether this is permanent damage or something that can be reversed.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
