How To Treat Pain And Swelling In The Ankle Caused Due To A Sprain?

I sprained my ankle pretty bad on May 29, 2016. It took a while to heal but I can walk fine on it now. I can t run or put too much strain on it yet and it stays slightly swollen all the time and still gets really swollen on the side when I m on my feet too long or if i hurt it. Two days ago, the outside of my big toe went numb and still is. Is this something I need to get checked out or is it just temporary from the swelling?

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Numbness on toe could be due to nerve injury, irritation or compression. The nerves innervating your toes pass through your ankle region. The trauma or swelling are capable of irritating the nerve or compressing it and give you the symptom you just describe.I will advise you rest and stop working the leg, take pain/anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen.
Also, given the long duration of symptoms, you may do an x-ray of the ankle to exclude any fraction.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
