How To Treat Pain In Rectal Area Radiating Towards Buttocks And Hip?

Several weeks ago I started having pain/pressure in my rectal area. No external hemmoroids, no constipation. The pain radiates to my right buttocks and hip. Some days it s only my hip that gives me pain and walking makes it worse. I used Rx suppositories for 7 days, but that didn t seem to make a difference. I keep putting off seeing a Dr., thinking it will improve on it s own. Can you give me any solutions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It is rare to have such symptoms as pain in rectum being referred to the hip, hip joint painful sometimes. Following may be the reasons for your symptoms:
- Proctalgia Fugax in which there is pain in the rectal area without much obvious other problems
- Developing fistula-in-ano
- Basic problem with the hip joint
- Muscular problems

This can be diagnosed with the following ways.
- Per-rectal examination, ano-proctoscopy by a general surgeon. This will help for any rectal pathology to be found out. Colonoscopy may be needed for further evaluation.
- CT^ scan or MRI of the hip joints, muscles and anorectal with pelvic study to rule out any pathology will be most helpful.

If hip joint problem is found then opinion of an orthopedic surgeon and further management as per the cause found to be done. Get the things as soon as possible to avoid complications by further delay in proper diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
