How To Treat Painful Cramps In Leg And Numbness In Foot?

I went for a very long walk and the front of my lower leg got very sore and felt cramped. The cramp got worse and incredibly painful, during this process a large area of the top of my foot became numb and is still numb almost 24 hours later. Is this something I need to have looked at? Is it dangerous if something is numb for that long? I am worried about permanent numbness.
