How To Treat Pericarditis After Experiencing Shingles?
I was diagnosed with pericarditis two weeks ago, caused by a bout of shingles. Doctor gave me an antiviral to take for a week for the shingles and ibuprofen for pain. The shingles is now almost completely healed (just crusty scabs where the rash was and some tender areas) but the pericarditis is still lingering. How long will the pericarditis last? Should I revisit the doctor since it s lingering?
Thanks for your question. I am Dr Asanghanwa Carlson. I would say pericarditis is an inflammation of the outer layer of the heart. It can be due to an infection and most at times can be caused by a viruses and in this case, the treatment is mostly symptomatic that is giving drugs for the symptoms you feel like pains. It is however a potentially dangerous health n which requires proper follow up. i will advise that you see your attending physician or a cardiologist so proper diagnosis of the pericarditis is made and treated appropriately as it could have other causes like bacteria and fungi. Good Luck
