My husband dropped a chemo bottle on the top of his foot ..his foot turned all the colours as a bruise, but although a lot of the bruising has gone down and some of the area isn t so swollen the area where the bottle hit is very swollen and red and shiny

You can use any over the counter analgesic medicine in proper dose range. You can also use analgesic ointment, gel or spray.
Along with medicine do the cold therapy (massage with ice) and provide the rest to affected foot.
If very severe pain then x-ray of affected foot is needed to check for fracture, if any.
Keep the foot up while sleeping by placing a pillow under the affected limb.
