How To Treat Red, Painful, Swollen And Watery Eye?

My mom has been suffering from red eye, itchiness, thrombic pain behind eye ( black round), swelling and photosensitivity, watery eye and blurt vision on left eye. We have been to general physician Here and asked for ophthalmologist appt but still waiting to get an appointment. She did have similar thing in 2012 and that time opthalmologist said she had swelling behind her eye(black circle) and recovered at that time. Here Dr prescribed her antibiotic drops but it s been not working since last two weeks.

Hello,

A few probable causes of painful swollen watery eyes are acute bacterial keratitis, acute bacterial keratoconjunctivitis, acute blepharitis, fungal keratitis, viral conjunctivitis, herpes zoster, anterior uveitis, acute iridocyclitis, and endophthalmitis. The condition requires immediate attention to prevent corneal scarring and permanent loss of vision. Treatment depends upon the underlying condition.

The traditional therapy for bacterial keratitis is fortified antibiotics, tobramycin (14 mg/mL) 1 drop every hour alternating with fortified cefazolin (50 mg/mL) or vancomycin (50mg/mL) 1 drop every hour.

Fourth generation fluoroquinolones like Moxifloxacin and Gatifloxacin are used for effective control and cure. Gatifloxacin ophthalmic drops 0.3% are to be put in the eye every 2 hours at least 8 times a day for 1-2 days. From 4th to 7th days, 1 drop is instilled into the affected eye 4 times a day. Please see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

From what you have described in your question, I advise you to see your ophthalmologist as soon as you get the appointment. There may be underlying infection behind such symptoms but you haven't mentioned if she had fever or not.

Is it unilateral or both eyes affected? Is your mother diabetic or not? Meanwhile, follow the antibiotic eyedrop regime, avoid any precipitating factors, take symptom reliever medications e.g. painkiller but I highly recommend you to se ophthalmologist ASAP.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nirali Thakkar, Pathologist and Microbiologist
