Hello,
A few probable causes of painful swollen watery eyes are acute bacterial keratitis, acute bacterial
keratoconjunctivitis, acute blepharitis, fungal keratitis,
viral conjunctivitis, herpes zoster,
anterior uveitis, acute iridocyclitis, and
endophthalmitis. The condition requires immediate attention to prevent corneal scarring and permanent loss of vision. Treatment depends upon the underlying condition.
The traditional therapy for bacterial keratitis is fortified antibiotics, tobramycin (14 mg/mL) 1 drop every hour alternating with fortified cefazolin (50 mg/mL) or vancomycin (50mg/mL) 1 drop every hour.
Fourth generation
fluoroquinolones like Moxifloxacin and Gatifloxacin are used for effective control and cure. Gatifloxacin ophthalmic drops 0.3% are to be put in the eye every 2 hours at least 8 times a day for 1-2 days. From 4th to 7th days, 1 drop is instilled into the affected eye 4 times a day. Please see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
