How To Treat Redness And Pain In Arm After Removing I V Needle Insertion?

My husband had a iv inserted this past Monday and removed Tuesday. It was in his left arm. The nurse that removed it pulled the needle straight up, not removing it straight out. Now is arm is red and hurting and a knot popped up and is moving up his arm. What do we do, put a cold pack on it or heat?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
It seems that there might be having some extravasation of injecting material or blood in soft tissue leading to swelling and pain at the site of iv site.
Apply ice pack 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days.
There is also a possibility of having Thrombophlebitis as well.
Then apply thrombophob on the site.
Ok and take care.
