How To Treat Sharp Nerve Pain While Being A Methadone Addict?

I m an addict in recovery from a 10 year meth addiction. I havent used since 2012 and I ve been dealing with severe chronic pain only from the waist down, the hips are the worst, and the feet with shooting nerve pain from time to time. This has been chronic since 2012. I was on methadone and I wanted to try suboxone from a different doctor, and it didn t work at all, so I wanted to switch back to my doc who gave me methadone and he wouldn t take me, nor any other doctor because being on suboxone apparently disqualifies for pain meds. I m on the verge of shooting myself in the head to end this agony. At which point does a doctor help someone who s in severe pain with a history of drug abuse? Should I see a pain specialist instead? I m at the end of my rope, please help!

Hello,,

Since you are having sharp nerve pain and have history of addiction to opioid medicines, it looks like you have damaged your nerves or the nerves are getting poor blood supply. Sharp nerve pain may take time to heal. You should have patience. You may have sciatica, neurological disorder or peripheral neuropathy. If diabetic, keep your blood glucose level normal at all costs else it will cause worsening of the symptoms.

You are suggested to visit a Neurologist, get clinically examined. He may help you get connected to a pain specialist. Get all the required blood tests, Nerve Conduction tests, Nerve biopsy, Imaging tests(CT, MRI, EEG) done. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. In the meantime take vitamin B1, B6, B12, folic acid rich food or supplements.

Take vitamin E rich food or supplements (Evion-400), once daily for 10 days to supplement any nutritional deficiencies. Massage with topical painkiller gels, lotions or sprays are effective but take time. Exercises under a physiotherapist, Counselling with medications under a Psychiatrist may help. Electrical stimulation, lifestyle changes, quitting addictions are helpful. Get treated at the earliest. Body may respond slowly so have patience.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
