Prematurity itself does not mean that a child will not speak because there are a large number of children who are premature and able to speak well.
It is possible however, that injury or issues can occur in different areas of the brain including the area involved in speech.
If the exact reason for his speech delay is doubted or not clear it would be best to get a second opinion with a speech therapist and neurologist.
