How To Treat Swollen Ankles With History Of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Hello, I recently suffered a deep vein thrombosis in my left calf and ankle. Both of my ankles swell during the day, but they go down at night. When I wake in the morning, they are almost totally normal. Should I be taking a diuretic for the swelling? How do I treat this. I am seeing a hematologist and taking Xarelto as a blood thinner. Thanks, Michael Smith in Norfolk, VA

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the swelling ankles indicate circulatory compromise rather than fluid from less heart pumping, in later case, diuretic as lasix can help. The management of ankle swelling with history of deep vein thrombosis is:
- Compression stockings
- Anti platelet
- Blood thinner
- Avoidance of smoking
- Keeping ambulatory and avoiding prolong bed ridden conditions

Being in regular follow up with your doc for PT INR evaluation is must and Doppler peripheral circulation to evaluate the patency of the vessels.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
