How To Treat The Space Between The Hip Joints Causing Severe Hip Pain?

My 87 year old mother has a very painful left hip, the x-ray shown to me showed no space between the hip joints. She has had this pain for a decade, and refused hip replacement as she was nursing my father She has developed a degree of dementia and is not able to take steps with her right foot. The Dr. Theory is she is not processing the pain is in her left hip and is unable to lift the rt. foot to amb. They are suggesting a cordisone shot to elevate the pain in her left hip. I am wanting your view on this shot or would long term care and w/c be a better option?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear about her disease. Hip is commonly involved by osteoarthritis. The management depends on severity.

We initially try pain killers, however in very advanced cases joint replacement may be an option.

Many times corticosteroids injection in the joints is quite effective in such cases.

It may give great comfort of the pain, though that is temporary, can last for a few months. So yes in her case the injection may be a good choice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
