Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I would like to get off eliquis mainly because I hate taking a pill for the rest of my life, also I am tired and hip joints starting to hurt and these may be side effects. I went on it bec of arterial flutter. I had a cardioversion and it is completely regulated for past six months. They state there is a minor leak in left atrial and they want to avoid possible blood clot. I understand this leakage is not uncommon. I would like to get off the medication for awhile at least to compare energy level and joint pain. There is no info except to talk to doctor. Have some people got off it by just reducing intake over a period of time.

How To Wean Off Eliquis?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. I would explain that you can stop this drug cold turkey. But, you should know that this would increase the risk for stroke from possible paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes. Anyway, I would recommend taking a low dose 2.5 mg twice daily at first, to see if your symptoms are improved. Another option would be to take Aspirin instead of Eliquis. You can make the switch directly (not gradually). You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues. Hope to have been helpful! Wishing all the best.
