I take 10 mg of zolpidem tartrate nightly. I would like to stop taking these, but I know it is not done quickly or cold turkey as some people refer to it. How would you suggest to wean myself off of these safely. They do work effectively, but I have been on these since the around 1998. Thanks, LB.

u have to taper slowly ..tab zolpidem 7.5 mg for 1 month ...5 mg for next month....2.5 mg for next month ...1.25 mg for next month ..such long tapering is needed as u are taking drug for long time ...I think such long tapering is needed
I agree with you on the fact that you can not stop cold turkey zolpidem, as it may aggravate your situation, because of withdrawal syndrome.
For his reason, I would recommend reducing the dose to the half for a week and then another half for a week. After, you should take half a tablet once in two days and then stop.
If you experience insomnia during this gradual reduce of the dose, I would recommend adding melatonin 5mg before sleep for a month. It will help have a good sleep and it does not cause addiction.
Hope to have been helpful to you! Best wishes, Dr. Aida
