Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been taking Lamictal 100 mg 2x/day for about 10 years for possible bi-polar. Discovered many years back that it may not be bi-polar but post traumatic stress. A doctor says its treated the same. I no longer see a psychiatrist, and haven t for many years...managed with meds. Of course blood tests annually. My new family/general practitioner won t continue to prescribe it, says I need to see a psychiatrist for that. I ve been taking Lexapro for a few months now (after taking Paxil for 18 years). It seems to help me much better than Paxil. Can I safely be weaned off the Lamictal?
First of all, you can decrease the dose of Lamictal by 25 gram every two weeks.
For example, you can take 75 mg twice per day for two weeks, then 50 mg twice per day for two weeks, then 25 mg twice per day for two weeks, then 25 mg every other day for two weeks, then stop taking it.
But, you should see a psychiatrist as early as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
