How To Withdraw From Diltiazem?

Is it safe to gradually stop taking Diltiazem? I m taking 120 mg. per day (for 11 years) for tachycardia that has become less and less frequent. However, I m having dizziness and almost fainting and it seems to happen after taking the medication. This has only happened a couple of times, but I d like to try eliminating this medication. My blood pressure has always been normal or a little low.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The dose of the medication should be tapered slowly. Since you had been taking this medication for a long time, it may take a longer time to wean off.

You should ideally get connected with an addiction rehabilitation center or a detox center or stay connected with your treating doctor.

Withdrawal symptoms may arise a few hours after the last dose. Symptomatic treatment is done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
