How To Withdraw From Thyronorm?

Hi Good Afternoon sir
My Mother is having hypothyroidism since 1 year.
Her starting tsh level was 6.8 she was prescribed thyronorm 50mg.
We are monitoring for every three months.
last 3 months back her tsh level was 2.6.
last week her tsh level was 1.5. Her present age/weight is 55yr/78yr.
Can we reduce the thyronorm dose to 25mcg.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Usually according to TSH level, dose of levothyroxine is adjusted. But drug should never be stopped as in hypothyroidism patient thyroid gland is not able to produce sufficient hormone, and so supplement of hormone is needed. Your TSH value now is 1.5, so yes you can reduce thyronorm dose to 25 ug. But DON'T stop drug and regularly monitor TSH level.

Hope your concern is solved. Consult your treating physician and reduce dose after discussion with him. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
