Different organisations have varying recommendations regarding the use of
aspirin but in general it is recommended in:
(1) persons who have a high calculated 5 or 10 yr risk of a
coronary heart disease (the risk is calculated by looking at your age,
smoking history, LDL,HDL, family history,
hypertension)
(2)it is used in most diabetics especially if there are other risk factors
(3)also recommended in persons who have already had an event to prevent reoccurrence
Aspirin is associated with increased risk of
gastrointestinal bleeding and the pros and cons must be weighed when starting.
If your doctor has calculated your risk of an event based on the factors mentioned above, it may have indicated that you are at high risk, you should speak to him/her for clarification.
