Hypertensive With Heart Problems Advised To Have Sodium Bicarbonate Supplement For Elevated Levels Of Potassium. Is It Safe?

Thank you. A relative of mine has elevated levels of potassium in his blood, and his nephrologist has suggested he take sodium bicarbonate supplement. He is hypertensive, has heart problems (CVD) and recently had a pacemaker put in. Is it safe for him to take the dodium bicarbonate

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hi
I read your query very carefully.

Yes the treatment choosed by the nephrologist is safe and will help to treat hyperkalemia and would prevent future complications.

The side effects of this are few and most important are gastrointestinal.

So don't worry.

Wish you and your cousin health.
