Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 6 months pregnant (child 3) Last night I cut my thigh when I tripped over a standing household fan. A piece of the plastic on the stand which broke (when I fell) made a laceration and I had it cleaned thoroughly and sutured at the hospital within an hour of my fall.
The ER doctor asked if I was up to date with tetanus shots. I had all my shots as a child and two boosters in my teens and again around 10 years ago. He decided not to give me the tetanus shot as I am pregnant and the wound was low risk. I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow to have my wound cleaned and dressed again.
We live in Europe and routine vaccination in pregnancy is not encouraged here.
I would prefer not to vaccinate due to concerns for my baby there is still very few studies which have been conducted on pregnant women. But obviously I am worried in case of a risk of tetanus. I had a tetanus infection when I was 19 despite being immunised.
Should I ask for the tetanus booster tomorrow (within 48 hours of the cut) or should I be sufficiently protected with tetanus antibodies with my past history? I read on the WHO website that adults should gain immunity of they have has at least 5 doses and that immunity may last beyond 10 years.
Thank you
