I am a 44 year old male. I had ACL reconstruction arthroscopic surgery on May 1, 2018. I also had a microfracture performed due to damaged cartilage. After the surgery, my calf has swollen. When I went Monday for a check-up, a sonogram was performed and it was discovered that I had an occlusive thrombus from the left common femoral vein to the left calf veins. (the occlusive thrombus was found in the common and superficial femoral veins, popliteal vein, and calf veins). I was admitted to the ER and they prescribed me Xarelto (the starter pack). I am on day 4 now, and the swelling has decreased, especially at overnight, but comes back once I start walking on the leg in the morning time. I wear a 30-40 mmHg compression sock on the leg as well as keep it elevated (although at work I only keep it in a chair so that it is elevated, just not above my heart. At night, it is elevated above the heart.).
The ER doctor and internist who treated me said the Xarelto will help with the keeping the blood from clotting. My concern, as probably it is for most patients with DVT, is the breaking up of the clot and it traveling through the body. With that said, I have read on the internet (probably not a good idea) that once the clotting stops, the body begins to immediately produce the things necessary to create plasmin that breaks up the clot. I also read that usually it takes 5-10 days for the clot to somehow attach to the vessel wall and for the vein to start covering the clot so that it does not break away.
The doctors do not want me to continue my physical therapy until next week (I am taking a week off). So, come next week, I don't want to risk having something break off while I do the physical therapy.
What I really want to know is the time frame for the clot to start being dissolved and not have the risk of it breaking away (or if there really is a time frame for that). I would also like to know if what I read on the internet is true about the vessel wall growing around the clot to protect the body. I know that given the extent of the clotting, it will take probably several months to clear up (if it clears up completely) and I already have a prescription for the Xarelto for 5 months of treatment.
Thank you
