I am a Dentist and I performed dental oral surgery, bone grafting to prepare for her implant placement. She has no known drug allergies & takes no meds on a routine basis except OTC vitamins. I prescribed Amoxicillin 500mg t.i.d for 10 days, peridex oral rinse, and ibuprofen 400 mg t.i.d. for 2 days then as needed for discomfort thereafter. I also rx Norco for her discomfort. She then flt numbness after the local anesthetic wore off. I identified the mental foramen and avoided her nerve, so she had a stretch injury. So I prescribed Decadron 4 mg Disp: 3 day 1, the next day 2,next day 2, then last day 1. Several days later she said she had swelling on her cheek. I brought her into the office to eval and it looked like she had cellulitis,so I prescribed Flagyl 500 mg 1 q.i.d. She has a medical hx of fibromyalgia, but can't take meds for it because she said it gives herperipheral neuropathy. She said she is getting neuropathy with the flagyl. I told her to discontinue the flagyl. Her surgery site looks great, no sign of infection, but her cheek tissues are thickened like cellulitis, that's why I added the flagyl. She has no pain just the tissue thickening , the peripherial neuropathy, and some minimal numbness on her lip which will probably go away. Any suggestion as to what to rx if anything in addition to the amoxicillin. She said she usually has opposite reactions to meds & amoxicillin is really all she can take with no problems. I thought she was having a problem with anaerobic bacteria.
