I Am Scheduled For A Subtotal Or Total Colectomy Next

I am scheduled for a subtotal or total colectomy next week for severe diveticulitis of the sigmoid and transverse colon. I have had 4 CT confirmed bouts of diverticulitis in the last 6 months. Two hospitalizations and can no longer take fluroquinolines due to an achilles tendon rupture and other tendon associated problems. I am treated with daily im injections of invanz when I have a flare. I have tics throughout my entire colon and may require complete removal of the colon depending on whether a healthy section of colon can be located for connection to my rectum. My surgeon also wants to retain a small segment of the colon close to the rectum if possible to help with bowel function. I will not need a colostomy created according to my surgeon. To be honest, this surgery has me stressed out. my biggest concern is what my bowel function will be like after surgery. I fear being incontinent or stuck having to be close to the bathroom all the time due to frequency. I have heard people having in excess of 10 loose stools per day. I already eat a high fiber diet with lots of fresh friuts and veggies. I can't imagine not being able to eat those things anymore. Some people say you can't eat those types of foods after surgery without bloating and more diarrhea. I have tried a gluten free diet which made me feel better but did not reduce the frequency of my bouts of diverticulitis. I will most likely continue the gluten free diet as it helps me feel better. I have immune deficiency issues (hypogammaglobinemia) and I think it helps treat that condition more than the GI issues as I do not have Celiac disease. I have also had some minor GI bleeding associated with my flares but thus far no abcess or perforations. Have I made the right decision to have surgery?
