I have a spot on my inner labia, right side, near the rear opening of my vagina. It has been tested for STD's, all negative. It has been biopsied - 2 mm punch with connective tissue - and checked for lichen planus, lichen sclerosis, lichen simplex and VIN. All negative and the tissue was normal. I've been treated with antibiotics, anti fungals both oral and topical, prednisone and steroid cream. The only relief came with the prednisone, which reduced the symptoms while I took it, but did not have a lasting effect. My gynecologist, family doctor and dermatologist have no idea what is causing this problem.
There is no physical sign of the problem area. I have to point it out to the doctors at each exam. It itches only during the day when I am active. There is a slight burning associated with the itch. Walking and anything touching the spot, such as when I go to the bathroom and during sex, causes the symptoms to appear. There are usually no symptoms when I'm sitting or lying down. When at its worst, the itching will send shoots of pain up inside me.
I can minimize the symptoms by staying extremely well-hydrated, but they never go completely away. When I am exercising and begin to lose hydration, they worsen. If I am somewhat dehydrated I will occasionally feel it, even when sitting or lying down. At those times, it feels as though there is a bug under my skin, crawling around.
All of this began about 3-4 years ago. It was sporadic for the first 18 months, but settled in permanently about 2 1/2 years ago. Can you help?
