I Have An 11 Year Old Maltese Female, Who Three

I have an 11 year old Maltese female, who three days ago was acting lethargic but with no other symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting or anything unusual or out of the ordinary. Upon bringing her to the vet she was tested for lyme and other tick related illness and the results were negative. After two days of not eating and incessant vomiting a return visit to the vet revealed high counts of enzymes and diagnosed with kidney failure and was told that she will in all likelihood die within the week. My question is can kidney failure come on so quickly and with such dire prognosis seemingly overnight?
