I Have Been Having Sever Pain In My Lower Back/top

I have been having sever pain in my lower back/top of my butt (muscles). I'm having a hard time describing the pain - it's not exactly throbbing, but it's not dull and not sharp. For 3 days last week it was shooting down the left side specifically, when I walked or put any kind of pressure on my left leg (including knee)'
, it felt like someone was stabbing me in my left butt cheeck (sorry, but I couldn't think of another way to put it) and then shot down my left leg. I was going to call jy doctor the next morning, but woke up and it was better. Now it's pain on both sides and when I wlk the pain shoots down my right leg. I have not been injured so I have no idea why this is going on. I do have some medical conditions including fibromyalgia and spinal arthritis, but I have never experienced anything like this. A friend told me it might be psiatica(?spelling?), which I have had before on ky right side, but that pain always went from my back to my hip. Any ideas as to what this could be? Any suggestions on how to treat it? My pain meds don't seem to help - only ice and heat (I can't use ice too much because I'm sensitive due to the fibro), but not a lot of relief.
