I Have Frequent Gas Bubbles Travel Up Past The Left

I have frequent gas bubbles travel up past the left side of my groin. Recently one such bubble stayed in place and caused tremendous pain. I laid on my back and massaged the area until the gas moved upward with some relief. It seems to be in the inguinal area. Is this the normal path for gas before exiting my body. BTW I had successful inguinal hernia surgery with a mesh patch for my left side.
