Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a number of sleep studies and have been diagnosed with central sleep apnea. I have had this condition for about 6 years. I also suffer from chronic pain and was prescribed some very strong meds )morphine (injectable) Oxycontin (80 mg) and fentanyl citrate suckers. They nearly killed me (hospitalized 3 times-last episode 45 days) When I was taken off the ventilator and had trach removed, I was given (I believe) Tylenol only for pain. I suffered more but survived. Since then, I am only on Percocet for pain. My sleep apnea is horrible! My bi-pap doesn't help and I can't get a new one (servo) until next June due to Medicare rules (5 years for new machine) I get mixed answers from physicians when I ask if Percocet and Xanax (used only at night to help me tolerate the mask) contribute to the sleep disorder. I explained that when hospitalized I was not on the bi-pap or percocet and rarely was given something to help me sleep, yet I did not have the severe fatigue I have experienced since I came home and went back on these two meds.
My question is.....do these meds contribute to sleep apnea?
Thanks so much!!
